Pioneer men's soccer team punches ticket to MWC Tourney with victory at Lawrence

APPLETON, Wis. - The goal was clear-cut for the Grinnell College men's soccer team Saturday - beat Lawrence and the Pioneers would qualify for the Midwest Conference Tournament.

The Pioneers delivered on that mission, recording a 3-1 victory over the Vikings to earn the fourth and final seed in the tourney field.

After the teams were tied 1-all at halftime, the Pioneers dominated the second half by outshooting the hosts 14-4 and scoring twice. Grinnell also held a 9-1 edge in corners, including 8-1 in the second half.

Anthony Hong '27 got Grinnell on the board just 11 minutes into the contest with a goal assisted by Jaxon Willoughby '26. It was Hong's fourth goal of the season and seventh in his career. The Vikings scored 11 minutes later to force a halftime tie.

The contest remained deadlocked until the 73rd minute when Oliver Northing '26 cashed in on a penalty kick, his fourth goal this season and 15th in his career.

Just a minute later, Willougby found the back of the net for his third goal and ninth in his career. Dylan Maddux '25 and Northing had the assists.

Northing had five of Grinnell's shots, Hong and Maddux added three apiece and Willoughby and Ezra Gould '27 had two each. Maddux has 55 shots on goal during his career, one shy of the school record.

Jayson Kunkel '26 was in goal for Grinnell and had two saves.

The Pioneers, 4-2-2 in the league and 8-5-5 overall, will play MWC champ and tourney host Lake Forest College on Friday. The Vikings are 1-5-2 in the MWC and 2-11-4 overall.
