Pioneer basketball team gets contributions from many in 135-79 victory over Maranatha Baptist

GRINNELL, Iowa - Grinnell College's men's basketball squad enjoyed a true team effort Friday night, as 17 players found the scoring column in the Pioeners' 135-79 victory over Maranatha Baptist University.

Kai Te Huki '27 was a sharp-shooter at Darby Gymnasium, hitting 6-of-13 shots from 3-point land on his way to scoring 27 points. Sean Walser '26 added 14 points and Sean Murphy '26, Jordan Lee '27 and Nick Lundy '27 added 12 apiece.

Lundy posted a double-double with a career-high 11 rebounds. Harris Dar '28 and Jordan Lee '27 each dished out six assists and Tolu Johnson '25 and Carson DeBruhl '27 each had career-highs of five assists. John Vincent '26 posted a career-best three blocks and Johnson had two.

Grinnell (3-2) used a big run to pull away in the first half. Leading just 24-21 with 9:24 left, the Pioneers scored 13 unanswered points to build a 37-21 cushion. Strahinja Nikolic '27 began the run with a layup, David Bluder '25 added another lay-in and Lee drained a trey. Te Huki, Vincent and Lundy added consecutive close-range baskets to complete the surge.

Grinnell pushed its lead to 59-34 by halftime and sailed from there, outscoring Maranatha Baptist (1-6) by a 76-45 edge in the final 20 minutes.

The Pioneers entertain Macalester College at 3 p.m. Saturday.
