Grinnell men's basketball team wins by largest margin ever in Lawrence's gym

Pioneers' 32-point victory is biggest for Grinnell in 59 games at Vikings' venue

APPLETON, Wis. - Grinnell College's men's basketball team not only won in a gymnasium where it's difficult to do so, but made history in the process.

The Pioneers strolled past Lawrence University 110-78 Saturday afternoon at Alexander Gym, with the 32-point difference marking Grinnell's largest margin of victory ever in the Vikings' home venue.

Grinnell, playing for the 59th time at Lawrence since 1940, improved to 2-0 in the Midwest Conference and 7-2 in all games. The Vikings dipped to 0-2 in the league and 2-6 overall.

Grinnell rode a balanced scoring attack, with Gabe Garcia '27 leading the way with 27 points including an 11-of-12 performance from the free throw line. Kai Te Huki '27 added 23 points, Harris Dar '28 made 9-of-11 shots from the field while tallying 19 points and Nick Lundy '27 scored 10.

Tolu Johnson '25 and John Vincent '26 each grabbed six boards, Garcia added five assists and Jackson Leone '25 tallied four steals.

The Pioneers fell behind 9-5 right off the bat, but gradually inched back with the aid of a 10-0 run. Sean Murphy '26 began the surge with three free throws and a trey, Garcia made two free throws and Te Huki scored on a layup to put the visitors on top 15-9.

Grinnell built a 51-35 lead by halftime and cruised from there, never allowing the Vikings closer than 12 points early in the half before pulling away for good.

The Pioneers head to Mount Vernon Wednesday to take on Cornell College. Tip-off is 7:30 p.m.
