Record book takes another hard hit as Grinnell men dominate Pioneer Classic

GRINNELL, Iowa - Grinnell College's assault on the swimming and diving record book continued in major fashion Saturday as the hosts sailed to the men's team title at the Pioneer Classic.

School, meet and pool records, as well as NCAA "B" cuts, came from Kevin Fitzgerald '25 in the 400-yard individual medley and Evan Feilmeyer '28 in the 200 butterfly. Fitzgerald's time of 3:56.85 beat his meet record of 4:05.61 from last year, as well as his school record of 3:57.94 from last season. Feilmeyer's clocking of 1:48.62 beat Ethan Yuen's meet and school record of 1:51.74, established last year.

Fitzgerald, Aidan Donovan '28, Evan Feilmeyer and Adam Feilmeyer '25 set a meet, school and pool record in the 400 freestyle relay. Their time of 3:02.64 beat the previous meet mark of 3:06.08 by Grinnell last year and the school record of 3:02.78, established in 2023.

Other meet records came from the 200 medley relay team of Cadel Saszik '28, Chris Zhou '27, Fitzgerald and Donovan (1:32.59), Noah Tsukuda '27 in the 200 freestyle (1:41.53) and Sam Larsen '25 in the 100 backstroke (49.70).

The medley relay's time bettered the mark of 1:32.70 set last year and ranks fifth in program history. Tsukuda beat the previous meet record of 1:41.92 by Nolan Larson of Gustavus Adolphus in 2019, and ranks fourth in program history. Larsen bettered the 100 back meet record of 50.46 by Saszik in the prelims after Saszik had improved on the old mark of 50.87 by Fitzgerald last year. Larsen's time ranks third in GC history.

Other champs were Tsukuda in the 1650 freestyle (16:24.69), Zhou in the 100 breaststroke (58.14, went 57.75 in the prelims which ranks sixth all-time) and Donovan in the 50 freestyle (21.00, second all-time).

Grinnell rang up 2846.5 points to easily win the team title. Morningside University was second with 1315.

Runners-up were Keely Yeager '27 in the 100 breaststroke (58.68), Saszik in the 100 backstroke (50.34, sixth all-time), Antoni Staszkiewicz '27 in the 400 individual medley (4:17.35) and Adam Feilmeyer in the 50 freestyle (21.16, fifth all-time).

Third place went to Hayden Devorsetz '28 in 1-meter diving (352.45), John Kafumbe '28 in the 1650 freestyle (16:58.81, 17th all-time) and Evan Feilmeyer in the 100 backstroke (51.77, ninth all-time).

Placing fourth were Jacob Lester '25 in the 1650 freestyle (17:10.30) and 200 freestyle (1:47.59), Benke Grobler '27 in the 100 breaststroke (59.22), Connor Smith '25 in the 400 individual medley (4:21.01) and Jafar Jarrar '27 in the 50 freestyle (21.42, 12th all-time).

Fifth place went to Luke Velte '27 in 1-meter diving (235.60), Jarrar in the 100 breaststroke (59.31, 16th all-time), Kafumbe in the 200 freestyle (1:48.67), Stiglitz in the 100 backstroke (52.30, 11th all-time), Cooper Malone '25 in the 400 individual medley (4:22.27) and Larsen in the 50 freestyle (21.64, 18th all-time). Jack Cerone '28 swam 59.21 in the 100 breast prelims, which ranks 15th all-time, and Malone's prelim time of 59.95 in that race is 20th.
