Grinnell men's tennis team remains perfect with pair of victories at UW-Whitewater Tourney

LAKE GENEVA, Wis. - Grinnell College's men's tennis team kept its perfect mark intact Saturday by picking up victories over two solid squads.

Grinnell, ranked 36th nationally, opened the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater with a 6-3 decision over Wheaton College and then slipped past Luther College 5-4.

Leo Esztergomi '24 was a perfect 4-of-4 on the day, winning twice in singles and twice in doubles. Sam Rudenberg '25, Karch Knoll '25, Aiden Klass '25 and Lucas Willett '26 all won two matches.

Grinnell broke out to 2-1 leads through doubles play in both matches. In the Wheaton victory, the Pioneers got victories from the No. 1 team of Willett and Knoll (8-5) and No. 3 squad of Henry Bridgers '24-Esztergomi (8-5).

The Pioneers collected singles wins from Willett at No. 2 (6-0, 2-6, 1-0), Esztergomi at No. 3 (6-4, 6-2), Knoll at No. 5 (6-2, 4-6, 1-0) and Klass at No. 6 (6-2, 6-4).

Winning doubles teams against Luther were the second-flight duo of Rudenberg-Klass (8-6) and the team of Esztergomi-Bridgers at No. 3 (8-6).

In singles, Cooke won at No. 1 (3-6, 7-6, 1-0), Esztergomi at No. 3 (6-4, 6-2) and Rudenberg at No. 4 (5-7, 6-1, 1-0).

Grinnell will face the host school, ranked 25th nationally, to wrap up the tournament Sunday.
