Grinnell goes toe-to-toe with UW-Whitewater in battle of nationally-ranked teams

LAKE GENEVA, Wis. - Sunday's match pitting the host school and Grinnell College was befitting a battle of two NCAA Division III men's tennis heavyweights.

Four singles matches went to third-set tiebreakers and a doubles matchup also went to a tiebreaker in UW-Whitewater's 6-3 victory in a meeting of nationally-ranked teams.

UW-Whitewater, ranked 25th nationally and owning a 5-2 record, jumped out to a 2-1 lead through doubles against No. 36 Grinnell. The Pioneers' victory came at the second slot, where Aiden Klass '25 and Sam Rudenberg '25 outlasted the Warhawsk' duo 8-7 (7-3).

Of the singles tiebreakers, Grinnell won two. Leo Esztergomi '24 battled to a 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (10-6) victory at the third slot and Klass earned a 6-4, 6-7 (2-7), 1-0 (10-8) victory at No. 6. Wilder Cooke '25 took the nation's 16th-ranked player to three sets at No. 1 singles, as well.

Grinnell, 4-1, travels to Minnesota next weekend to battle Gustavus Adolphus College, Bethel University and Macalester College.
