Pioneer women's basketball team loses 54-52 thriller at Beloit

GC still remains in hunt for MWC Tournament berth

BELOIT, Wis. - Grinnell College's women's basketball team may have lost to Beloit College Wednesday night, but the Pioneers still remain in the hunt for the Midwest Conference Tournament.

Beloit rallied from a five-point halftime deficit to clip the Pioneers 54-52 in a thriller that went down to the wire. That puts Grinnell, Beloit and Lawrence University in a three-way tie for fourth place in the league standings at 8-7 entering Saturday's regular-season finales.

Grinnell (13-10 overall) trailed 12-8 after one period, but stormed ahead with a 23-point outburst in the second frame for a 31-26 halftime lead. Beloit (11-13) came back in the third period and led 39-37 at its conclusion.

Grinnell tied it twice early in the fourth quarter, once on a basket by Reese Stephens '27 and again on a bucket by Skylar Thomas '26 that made it 41-all.

The Pioneers managed a 43-42 lead at the 3:19 mark on Erin Lillis' '24 layup. After Beloit went up 46-43, Bailey Strovers '27 drained a 3-pointer to tie the contest with 1:15 left.

The Buccaneers then scored four unanswered points before Eva Carchidi '24 displayed ice water in her veins by drilling a 3-pointer from the left wing with 21 seconds left to bring Grinnell within a point.

Consecutive fouls resulted in three Beloit free throws, pushing the hosts on top 53-49 with 12 ticks left. Grinnell got new life with 3.4 seconds to go when Carchidi was fouled shooting a 3-pointer. She calmly made all three free throws to make it a one-point game.

Beloit was fouled with 1.2 seconds left and made one of two free throws. Grinnell could only manage a three-quarters court desperation shot as the buzzer sounded.

Lillis and Nikki Ware '25 each scored in double figures for Grinnell with 13 and 10 points, respectively. Carchidi grabbed six rebounds, Ware had three steals and Lillis contributed three steals.

Grinnell hosts Monmouth College, winless in MWC play, Saturday at Darby Gymnasium. Senior Day festivities are planned prior to the scheduled 3 p.m. tipoff.
