Heroics from several propel GC softball team to thrilling win over Ozarks

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Heroics by several players paved the way to Grinnell College's 6-5, 11-inning thrilling victory over the University of the Ozarks softball team at the Fontbonne Tournament Saturday.

Samantha Chu '24 belted a grand slam homer in the fifth inning to erase a 3-0 deficit and Kyra Killion '24 hit an RBI walkoff single in the bottom of the 11th to secure the win. On the pitching front, Emma Trani '26 collected her first collegiate victory.

Grinnell got a strong one-two pitching performance from Lane Kohler '25 and Trani. Kohler worked four innings and struck out three, while Trani finished the game by tossing three-hit ball and fanning five over seven innings.

Kambria Anson '24 led Grinnell's nine-hit attack with three hits, while Emma DiGiacomo-Zahller '24 and Killion had two hits.

Grinnell lost a wild 10-8 decision to Carroll University in the opener. Grinnell fell behind 4-0 off the bat and played catch-up the rest of the way.

Chu had three of Grinnell's hits and Alexa Okada '24 and Taylor Durak '24 added two apiece. The Pioneers scored twice in the third inning on an RBI triple by Chu and run-scoring single by Durak.

In the fourth, Killion hit a sacrifice fly and Okada added a two-run double in the fifth. In the sixth, Sofia DiCarlo '25 hit a two-run single and Okada pushed across a run with a single.

Kathryn Vermeulen '24 and Trani combined pitching efforts, each working three innings.

Grinnell is back at it Sunday with games against Belhaven University and the host school.
