Grinnell softball team puts up great fight against No. 12 Belhaven

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Grinnell College's softball team recovered from a rough start to go toe-to-toe with unbeaten and nationally-ranked Belhaven University Sunday at the Fontbonne Tournament.

The Pioneers dug themselves in a 7-0 hole through two innings against the No. 12 Blazers, but instead of folding made a game of it and only lost 7-4.

Grinnell outhit the Mississippi-based institution 10-8, with Samantha Chu '24 belting three hits and Kambria Anson '24 adding two. In the pitching circle, Kathryn Vermeulen '24 bounced back from the teams first two innings with a strong performance that saw her strike out six batters.

Belhaven (7-0) scored twice in the first inning and five times in the second.

Grinnell scored twice in the sixth when Hannah Dykstra '25 belted an RBI triple to left and later stole home. In the seventh, Jasmine Oda '25 blasted a two-run single to right.

Grinnell (1-3) followed with a 3-1 setback to host Fontbonne University. The Pioneers got their run in the third inning on Anson's RBI single.

Lane Kohler '25 and Emma Trani '26 combined pitching duties for the Pioneers, with Kohler striking out two batters and Trani one while giving up just two hits in five innings of relief.

The Pioneers are in action again next Saturday in Rochester, Minn., against St. Olaf College and Luther College.
