GC men's tennis team opens 2024 with pair of huge victories

Among wins was 5-4 decision over Iowa Central, the No. 6 JUCO team last season

GRINNELL, Iowa – Grinnell College's men's tennis team celebrated its first-ever national ranking in style Sunday, toppling a pair of foes as the Pioneers began the 2024 portion of their campaign.

Among the victories for the No. 36 Pioneers was a 5-4 nail-biter versus a strong Iowa Central Community College, which finished last season ranked sixth nationally at the JUCO level.

Grinnell also blanked Augustana College 9-0 at the Bear Center Field House.

Grinnell cruised past Augustana to open the day, beginning with a sweep in doubles with the teams of Karch Knoll '25-Lucas Willett '26 (8-3), Leo Esztergomi '24-Aiden Klass '25 (8-0) and Albert Bostoen '26-Jacob Young '27 (8-4).

The Pioneers finished off the shutout by dominating singles with Wilder Cooke '25 (6-2, 6-1), Esztergomi (7-5, 0-6, 1-0), Knoll (6-1, 6-3), Young (6-0, 6-1), Henry Bridgers '24 (6-3, 6-2) and Anshul Satav '27 (6-0, 6-2).

Grinnell bolted out to a 2-1 lead in doubles play against Iowa Central. Victories came from the second and third duos of Knoll-Willett (8-6) and Bridgers-Cooke (8-3).

Grinnell went ahead 4-1 to start singles play with victories by Willett at No. 2 (6-4, 6-2) and Sam Rudenberg '24 at No. 3 (6-3, 6-1). After Iowa Central closed within 4-3, Klass finished off the victory with a 7-5, 6-0 win at No. 5 to secure the decision.

Grinnell will compete in the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Invitational next weekend.
