Pioneers remain in contention for MWC Tourney despite loss at Lake Forest

LAKE FOREST, Ill. - Though Grinnell College's women's basketball team lost an 83-62 decision at Lake Forest College Saturday afternoon, the Pioneers still control their own destiny for a potential Midwest Conference Tournament berth.

Grinnell is fourth place in the league at 7-6 with a 12-9 overall mark. Lake Forest is 4-8 in the MWC and 6-14 overall while winning its fourth game in a row.

Despite the loss, Grinnell went to the free throw line 41 times, the third-most attempts in program history. The Pioneers made 28 of those shots, fourth all-time.

Lake Forest scored the game's first eight points, but the Pioneers bounced back in impressive fashion and cut the gap to 12-11 on two free throws by Bailey Strovers '27.

However, the Foresters answered with a run of their own and led 27-18 after the first period. They went on to lead 49-31 at halftime and 69-44 after three quarters.

Erin Lillis '24 led Grinnell with 14 points and moved up to eighth on the Pioneers' all-time chart with 1,115, jumping past Dacey Waldron. Lillis also ranks 10th in program history for free throws made with 232 and is 12th in assists with 192.

Carolyn Pierce '27 added 11 points for Grinnell. Sara Booher '25 led the team in rebounds with six, while Grace Marsh '25, Nikki Ware '25 and Lillis had two steals each.

Grinnell has a huge test coming Wednesday when third-place Illinois College visits Darby Gymnasium. Tip-off is 7:30 p.m.
