GC softball team falls to UW-Stevens Point and host school on final day of Millikin Tourney

Pioneers tie school record for doubles in loss to Millikin

DECATUR, Ill. - Grinnell College's softball team dropped a pair of contests Sunday at the Millikin Tournament, falling 6-1 to once-beaten University of Wisconsin-Stevens Points and then dropping a thrilling 10-9 decision to the 22nd-ranked host school.

In the opener, Grinnell got hits from Kambria Anson '24, Taylor Durak '24 and Emma DiGiacomo-Zahller '24. The Pointers grabbed a 4-0 lead before the Pioneers got a run in the bottom of the fourth on Sofia DiCarlos '25 RBI groundout.

Christin Hartman '24 and Kathryn Vermeulen '24 combined pitching duties. Vermeulen fanned two batters.

In the wild affair with Millikin, the Pioneers tied a school record with six doubles, matching a total put up against Ripon College in 2019. Samantha Chu '24 had two of those doubles, which is tied for eighth-best in program history, and finished with three hits. Anson also had three hits and Jasmine Oda '25 added two.

Grinnell bolted out to a 7-2 lead through three innings. In the first, Anson had an RBI single through the right side. Chu hit an RBI single up the middle and Anson added a run-scoring double to left-center in the second.

In the third, Oda bashed a two-run double down the right-field line, Elyse Pender '27 scored on an error and Anson plated a run with an infield single.

However, Millikin rallied with five runs in the fourth inning to tie the game. Chu's two-run double to right-center in the seventh put Grinnell back on top before the hosts scored three times in the bottom of the frame.

Emma Trani '26 and Lane Kohler '25 shared pitching duties, with Trani registering two strikeouts and Kohler getting one.

Not only did Chu boost her school-record career doubles total to 40 on the day, she moved up to fourth for career hits with 137 and sixth for runs scored with 77.

The 3-7 Pioneers have a week off before opening an eight-game spring break schedule in Clermont, Fla., with two games next Sunday.
