Grinnell softball team strikes early and often in shutout victory against Bates

CLERMONT, Fla. - Grinnell College's offense struck early, and the pitching and defense was strong for the duration as the Pioneer softball team wrapped up its opening day of spring break with a 7-0 shutout of Bates College.

The Pioneers earned their first shutout of the season, as Christin Hartman '24 and Emma Trani '26 combined on a four-hitter Sunday at Legends Way. Hartman got the win, working four innings and fanning three batters. Trani worked the last three innings for the save and struck out one. They were aided by a flawless defense that had no errors.

Kambria Anson '24 and Kyra Killion '24 paced the offense with two hits apiece. The Pioneers went to work immediately with four runs in the opening frame. Two scored via an error, and Killion plated the other two with a single to right-center.

In the second inning, Anson hit an RBI single to left, Alexa Okada '24 scored on a wild pitch and Hannah Dykstra '25 knocked in a run with a groundout.

The victory took the sting out of a 6-5 loss to the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in Sunday's opening game. Grinnell outhit the Blugolds 9-8 and had a strong pitching performance from Kathryn Vermeulen '24, who issued just five hits and two earned runs while striking out three in 5.1 innings.

Anson had three hits for Grinnell, while Samantha Chu '24 contributed two.

Each team scored in the first inning, as Emma DiGiacomo-Zahller '24 accounted for Grinnell's run with a sacrifice fly to center. She now ranks third in program history with four sac flies.

Grinnell added two runs in the fourth for a 3-1 lead as Chu hit an RBI single to left and Anson singled to right to push across another run.

UW-Eau Claire took the lead with four runs in the sixth and another in the seventh. The Pioneers made things interesting in the seventh, as DiGiacomo-Zahller belted a two-run double to left to make it 6-5. However, Grinnell could get no closer.

On Sunday, Chu moved up to second for career hits at Grinnell with 140, fifth in runs scored with 80 and ninth in fielding assists with 219. Vermeulen ranks sixth in career pitching appearances with 59 and Anson is ninth in career hits with 117.

Grinnell will bring a 4-8 mark into Monday's games against Middlebury College and The College of Wooster.
