Grinnell baseball team opens spring break trip with victories over Asbury, Maryville

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Grinnell College's baseball team combined masterful pitching, timely hitting and stellar defense to claim victory in its opening two spring break games Saturday.

In the opener, three Grinnell pitchers combined their efficiency for a five-hitter as the Pioneers defeated Asbury University of Kentucky 4-2. It was just the third-ever meeting between the teams, and the first since 2000.

Ian Feld '25 was particularly sharp in getting the victory, giving up just three hits and striking out five in 6.2 innings. Garrett Nasif '24 held the lead with 1.1 innings of work and Ryan Jungers completed the victory with one inning of hitless ball to get the save. Nasif struck out two batters and Jungers had one K.

Sean Richardson '24 led Grinnell's 13-hit attack with three hits, while Mac McCain '25, Lucas Hadding '24 and Michael Flaherty '24 had two hits each.

Flaherty opened the scoring in the third inning, coming across on Richardson's RBI single through the right side. Asbury tied the contest at 1-all in the top of the fifth, but the Pioneers bounded right back in the bottom of the frame when Evan Borberg '24 hit a sacrifice fly to center and Flaherty scored on a passed ball.

McCain gave Grinnell some insurance with a solo homer in the sixth.

Grinnell's defense played errorless ball and Jake Hull '24 and Matthew Nakamoto '25 combined on a seven-hitter as the Pioneers followed with a 3-1 win over Maryville College of Tennessee.

Hull got the win, scattering five hits and striking out five in 7.1 innings. Nakamoto picked up the save, giving up two hits and no runs while striking out three during the remainder of the game.

Grinnell managed eight hits in the first-ever meeting of the two teams, with McCain collecting three of those and Ethan Crawford '25 and Joe Chanis '27 adding two apiece.

Grinnell got out to a 1-0 lead in the second with a run scored on a fielder's choice. After Maryville tied it in the third, Chanis had an RBI single to right-center in the seventh and Crawford belted a solo homer in the ninth.

The 8-7 Pioneers play Rhodes College on Sunday.
