Grinnell softball team steamrolls past 2 opponents as Chu sets new RBI record

Pioneers win twice via mercy rule

CLERMONT, Fla. - Grinnell College's softball team steamrolled a pair of opponents via the mercy rule Monday and saw a new school record in the process.

With another big day, Samantha Chu '24 set a new mark for career runs batted in as the Pioneers toppled Middlebury College 12-3 in five innings and The College of Wooster 11-1 in six innings at Hancock Park.

Chu pushed her career RBI mark to 103 to move past the previous record of 102 held by Kayla Morrissey and Darice Wheeler. During the day, Chu also inched up Grinnell's career ladder for total bases (second with 223), runs scored (fourth with 84), home runs (fifth with eight), fielding assists (eighth with 224)  and at-bats (10th with 355).

Chu had two of Grinnell's nine hits against Middlebury and Kathryn Vermeulen '24 earned the pitching victory, giving up just five hits and striking out four in a complete-game effort. The win was the 27th of her collegiate career, good for second-place on Grinnell's all-time list and just five shy of the school record. Vermeulen also ranks seventh for career innings pitched with 286.1 and eighth in strikeouts with 150.

Middlebury led 1-0 after the top of the third, but Chu blasted a two-run homer to right-center in the bottom of the inning.

After Middlebury went up 3-2 in the fourth, Grinnell erupted for 10 runs in the bottom of the frame. Lindsey Schultz '27 and Alexa Okada '24 each hit RBI doubles to right-center, Chu blasted a two-run double down the left-field line and Taylor Durak '24 ripped an RBI triple down the right-field line. Emma DiGiacomo-Zahller '24 added an RBI single up the middle, Lizzy Vermeulen '24 singled through the right side to plate a run and Jasmine Oda '25 blasted a three-run double to center.

Kathryn Vermeulen sat Middlebury down in order in the top of the fifth to secure the win.

The Pioneers put together a 12-hit attack in the victory over Wooster and Emma Trani '26 moved to 3-0 in the pitching circle with a complete-game seven-hitter. She struck out one batter.

Chu, Durak, Hannah Dykstra '25, DiGiacomo-Zahller and Kyra Killion '24 all had two hits for Grinnell. Killion gave Grinnell the lead for good with a sacrifice fly to right field in the second inning. In the third, Durak hit an RBI double to right and later stole home for a 3-0 lead. Chu's three-run homer to left in the fourth inning doubled that lead.

After Wooster scored in the bottom of the fourth, Durak hit a three-run double to center in the sixth and Dykstra bashed the first homer of her career, a two-run shot to center. Trani finished off the victory by holding Wooster off the board in the bottom of the sixth.

Grinnell, 6-8, meets Nazareth University and Washington & Jefferson College on Tuesday.
