Grinnell softball team keeps rolling along with two more victories via the mercy rule

CLERMONT, Fla. - The Grinnell College softball team continued its dominating ways Tuesday, claiming two victories via the mercy rule at Legends Way.

The Pioneers disposed of Nazareth University 8-0 in five innings and Washington and Jefferson College 11-1 in six innings, giving them four victories in a row by the mercy rule and five consecutive wins overall.

Grinnell got stellar performances from both its senior pitchers, Kathryn Vermeulen '24 against Nazareth and Christin Hartman '24 versus Washington and Jefferson.

Vermeulen gave up just two hits, struck out seven and issued just one walk in her victory. She now ranks fourth in program history for career shutouts with four and sixth in strikeouts with 157.

Grinnell's offense erupted for eight hits, with Tayor Durak '24 leading the way with two including an RBI single through the left side in the first inning.

In the second frame, Grinnell tacked on three runs as Samantha Chu '24 belted an RBI double down the left-field line and Durak hit a two-run double to left-center.

In the fourth, Durak earned an RBI from a bases-loaded walk, Anne Becker '26 hit a sacrifice fly to left and Kambria Anson '24 scored on a wild pitch. Elyse Pender '27 ended the game in the fifth with an RBI single to left.

Hartman struck out four, walked just one and scattered nine hits in her complete-game victory. Grinnell (8-8) had 12 hits, with Hannah Dykstra '25 getting three and Chu, Durak and Kyra Killion '24 adding two apiece.

Grinnell broke open a scoreless tie in the third inning with Dykstra's three-run homer. The Pioneers put up three more runs in the fifth on a passed ball and two-run single up the middle by Sofia DiCarlo '25.

The Pioneers added five runs in the sixth as Lindsey Schultz '27 hit a two-run double to left, two runs scored via an error and Killion hit an RBI double to left.

During the day, Chu moved up to second on Grinnell's career runs scored list with 90, Alexa Okada '24 moved to eighth with 73 and Durak 10th with 70. Durak is also fourth in career RBIs with 91, sixth in walks with 42 and ninth in career hits with 123.
