GC finishes spring break trip to Florida in thrilling fashion with come-from-behind victory

Okada breaks school record for career double plays turned

CLERMONT, Fla. - Grinnell College's softball team not only proved it could blow out teams on its spring break trip to Florida, the Pioneers also showed they can win close games.

After storming past Clarkson University 15-0 in five innings to start the day Thursday at Hancock Park, the Pioneers used some late-inning magic to rally past Millikin University 6-5.

The day also featured a school career record and game record. Alexa Okada '24 turned her 26th career double play, breaking the mark of 25 set by Amanda Ramirez. Additionally, Samantha Chu's '24 four runs scored against Clarkson tied a school mark.

The wins gave Grinnell a 7-1 mark in Florida, matching the team's school record for spring break trip victories.

Grinnell and Millikin, a team that had been in the national rankings a few weeks ago, split games earlier this season. On Friday, the Big Blue rallied from a 2-0 deficit to take a 5-2 lead.

But Grinnell didn't panic. With one out in the bottom of the seventh inning, Chu walked, Kambria Anson '24 reached on a bunt single and Taylor Durak '24 singled to left to load the bases. After a pitching change, Hannah Dykstra '25 delivered a two-run double to deep left to make it 5-4.

Emma DiGiacomo-Zahller '24 followed with a sharp double to right field to score Dykstra and pinch runner Lane Kohler '25 for the victory.

Kathryn Vermeulen '24 was the winning pitcher, giving up six hits and striking out three in a complete-game effort.

Earlier in the game, Okada put Grinnell on top 2-0 with a two-run single to left in the second inning. The Big Blue answered with two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth to go ahead 5-2, setting up the Pioneers' big comeback.

At the start of Friday's action, Grinnell erupted for 10 runs in the top of the first inning in its blowout victory over Clarkson. Grinnell pounded out 18 hits in the game, with Chu getting four of those and Anson, Durak, Dykstra, Jasmine Oda '25, Kyra Killion '24 and Sofia DiCarlo '25 adding two each.

Christin Hartman '24 earned the pitching victory, scattering four hits and striking out nine without giving up a walk.

In the big first inning, Durak blasted a three-run homer to left, Oda hit an RBI double, Okada added a two-run single, Chu plated three runs with a homer and Dykstra hit an RBI single.

The Pioneers tacked on four runs in the second on Okada's fielder's choice, Durak's two-run single and Dykstra's one-run single. In the fourth, DiGiacomo-Zahller hit an RBI infield single as the Pioneers sailed to their fifth consecutive run-rule victory.

Grinnell, which owns a seven-game winning streak, improved to 10-8. The Pioneers have more than a week off before hosting Simpson College next Saturday.
