Grinnell softball team drops pair of games to strong Simpson squad

Killion ties school record for career sacrifice flies

GRINNELL, Iowa - Grinnell College's softball team prepped for Midwest Conference play by facing one of its best opponents to date, Simpson College from the powerful American Rivers Conference.

Playing its 2024 home opener at the Softball Complex on a beautiful Saturday afternoon, the Pioneers broke out to a 4-0 lead in the opener before dropping a 6-5 nail-biter. Simpson finished off the sweep with a 6-1 victory in the second game to improve to 17-5 as Grinnell fell to 10-10.

Samantha Chu '24 and Kambria Anson '24 each had two hits in the opener for Grinnell. Grinnell scored twice in the first inning when Hannah Dykstra '24 pushed across a run and Lizzy Vermeulen '24 added an RBI with a sacrifice.

In the second inning, Anson ripped a two-run triple to right-center to make it 4-0. That was the ninth three-bagger of her career, which ranks third in program history.

The Storm tied it with four runs in the third inning and got another in the fourth. Grinnell tied it in the fifth with a run on an error, but the Storm retook the lead in the sixth and hung on from there.

Kathryn Vermeuelen '24 threw a complete game for Grinnell and struck out three. She now ranks fifth in program history with 163 Ks.

The Pioneers, who left nine runners on base in the first game, left another 12 on board in the second and were only outhit by Simpson 12-11. Emma DiGiacomo-Zahller '24 had three hits for Grinnell and Anson, Hannah Dykstra '25 and first-year Lindsey Schultz '27 added two each.

Simpson scored three runs in the second inning and another in the third. Grinnell got its run in the bottom of the third on Kyra Killion's '24 sacrifice fly to center, which tied the school mark for career sac flies with five. The Storm closed out the scoring with a run in the fourth and another in the fifth.

Christin Hartman '24 and Emma Trani '26 shared pitching duties for Grinnell, with Hartman fanning two batters and Trani one.

During the day, Chu moved up to sixth for career at-bats at Grinnell with 377 and Anson jumped to sixth for career hits with 127. Chu is also seventh for career fielding assists with 236.

The Pioneers begin MWC play next Saturday at Lake Forest College.
