Pioneer softball team puts together huge performance to knock off tough Coe squad

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Grinnell College's softball team stepped out of conference play Saturday afternoon for a rugged test against Coe College, a squad receiving votes for the national rankings.

But the Pioneers weren't fazed by the Kohawks' lofty standing in the slightest, scoring early and pulling away for a 3-1 victory in the opening game of the doubleheader.

Grinnell got a school record from Emma DiGiacomo-Zahller '24 for sacrifice flies in a game as the Pioneers scored once in the first inning and twice more in the third. Grinnell's pitching and defense held the Kohawks, who went deep into the NCAA Division III World Series a year ago, to their lowest run output in a month.

The Pioneers managed six hits, including two each from Taylor Durak '24 and Jasmine Oda '25, and also got a sharp pitching performance from Christin Hartman '24. Hartman scattered nine hits over six innings and struck out one for the win, while Emma Trani '26 went the rest of the way for the save.

Additionally, there were multiple spectacular catches in the Grinnell outfield with Durak making several of those in left.

The Pioneers' run in the first inning came when DiGiacomo-Zahller lofted a sacrifice fly to center field to plate Kambria Anson '24. DiGiacomo-Zahller added her school-record second sacrifice fly in the third, hitting one to right field to score Anson. Oda later hit an RBI infield single to score Durak in the third, making it 3-0.

Coe got its run in the fourth inning and had runners at first and third with one out in the bottom of the seventh when shortstop Hannah Dykstra '25 turned a double play, snagging a line drive and tossing to Oda at first to end the game.

Grinnell (13-13) fell into an early hole in the second game, as Coe (20-6) got out to a 4-0 cushion through two innings and led 7-0 after five on its way to a 7-3 victory. Grinnell got its runs in the sixth on Alexa Okada's '24 RBI double to right-center and Samantha Chu's '24 run-scoring double to left.

Kathryn Vermeulen '24 was the pitcher of record for Grinnell and struck out three.

Grinnell steps back into Midwest Conference play Wednesday when Knox College visits for a twin bill. The first pitch is at 3 p.m. at the Softball Complex.
