Pioneers pile up 32 runs while give up none in doubleheader sweep of Knox

GRINNELL, Iowa - When a softball team combines powerful hitting, stellar pitching and stingy defense, good things will happen.

Grinnell College enjoyed that Wednesday in a Midwest Conference doubleheader sweep of Knox College at the Softball Complex.

Grinnell (15-13, 4-2 MWC) pounded out 16 hits and got a two-hit pitching performance from Christin Hartman '24 on its way to winning the opener 18-0. In the second game, Lizzy Vermeulen '24 fired two-hit ball and the Pioneers collected 15 hits in a 14-0 victory. Grinnell's defense played errorless ball the entire day.

In the opener, Taylor Durak '24 tied a school record held by multiple players by scoring four runs. She and Hannah Dykstra '25 each had five RBIs, fourth in program history. As a team, Grinnell's totals of 17 RBIs and 18 runs rank fourth and sixth in program history, respectively.

Durak and Emma DiGiacomo-Zahller '24 each had three hits to lead the Pioneers in the first game. In the pitching circle, Hartman struck out five and did not issue a walk to a Knox (2-21, 0-6 MWC) batter.

The Pioneers led 3-0 after one inning as DiGiacamo-Zahller hit an RBI single and Jasmine Oda '25 added a two-run single. Durak pushed across two runs in the second with a single and DiGiacomo-Zahller had an RBI single for a 6-0 lead.

The Pioneers put up five runs in the third on a two-run single by Durak, RBI singles by Dykstra and DiGiacamo-Zahller and an error. Seven runs came across in the fourth, with the highlight being Dykstra's grand slam blast to left. Durak and Kyra Killion '24 had RBI singles and Kambria Anson '24 pushed across a run on a fielder's choice.

A nine-run second inning helped Grinnell put the second game out of reach early. Anson led the offense with three hits, while Vermuelen struck out five and didn't walk a batter as the team's winning pitcher.

Durak had an RBI single in the first, Dykstra followed with a run-scoring triple and DiGiacamo-Zahller added an RBI double. The second inning saw a three-run triple by Vermeulen, two-run double from Durak, two-run single by Anson, RBI double by Samantha Chu '24 and RBI single by DiGiacamo-Zahller.

Dykstra belted a solo homer to left in the third and Anne Becker '26 added an RBI single in the fourth.

As has happened often this season, there was plenty of movement on Grinnell's career top 10 list during the day. Durak now ranks third in hits (138) and total bases (222), fifth in runs (84) and eighth in at-bats (370). Anson is fifth in runs scored (84) while Chu ranks fourth in fielding assists (252), ninth in games started (123) and 10th in walks (38). Dykstra moved up to ninth for career homers with five.

On the pitching front, Hartman's six career shutouts rank second and Vermeulen's total of five is fourth. Vermeulen is sixth in career strikeouts with 176 and Oda is eighth for fielding putouts with 363.

Grinnell entertains Ripon College Saturday at the Softball Complex. The first pitch of the twin bill is at 1 p.m.
