Pioneer baseball team holds down Lawrence, but still drops doubleheader

GRINNELL, Iowa - Grinnell College's baseball team held down Lawrence University's potent offense in a doubleheader Saturday, but the hosts had troubles scratching out runs of their own as they fell 5-1 and 4-1 at Pioneer Park.

Grinnell had six hits in the opener, with Nikolas Ruden '26 and Connor Goodson '26 collecting two apiece. Lawrence tallied single runs in the first, third and fifth innings and added two in the seventh.

Grinnell got its run in the ninth on Sean Tashjian's '25 sacrifice fly to left. Jake Hull '24 was the pitcher of record, tossing seven-hit ball over five innings while striking out one. Matthew Nakamoto '25 gave up just one hit and fanned three in finishing off the game. Grinnell's defense turned three double plays in the game, which ranks sixth in program history.

The second game saw Grinnell (9-13, 2-4 Midwest Conference) outhit the visitors 7-3, but the Pioneers were hampered by three errors and stranded base runners. The Pioneers had a strong one-two pitching punch from Jakob Runkel '26 and Daniel Shaul '26. Runkel was tagged with the loss despite tossing three-hit ball over 5.2 innings and striking out 11. Shaul didn't give up a hit and struck out two while finishing up the game.

Sean Richardson '24 and Michael Flaherty '24 each had two hits for Grinnell. Goodson gave the Pioneers their lone run in the third inning with an RBI single through the right side.

Lawrence (17-6, 9-0 MWC) took the lead for good with three runs in the third inning and added an insurance run in the fourth.

Grinnell heads to Mount Vernon on Wednesday for a doubleheader with Cornell College.
