Big Grinnell comeback falls just short in NCAA Tourney loss to 10th-ranked Belhaven

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - When Grinnell College's softball team met Belhaven University nearly three months ago, the Blazers got out to an early lead and then had to hold off a furious rally by the Pioneers.

Thursday's NCAA Division III Regional Tournament opener proved to be a similar situation, as Grinnell spotted the 10th-ranked Blazers a 4-0 lead before clawing its way back into contention. But in the end, the Mississippi-based school held on for a 4-2 victory on a cloudy day at Washington University.

Third-seeded Grinnell will move to an elimination game Friday against top-seeded host WashU at 1:30 p.m.

Though Grinnell was held to four hits by Belhaven's ace pitcher, the Pioneers still managed to get runners on base and in scoring position several times.

The second-seeded Blazers scored once in the first inning and three more times in the third before Grinnell made things interesting in the fifth inning. With one out, Lindsey Schultz '27 singled to left field and Samantha Chu '24added with a two-run home run blast over the wall in left-center field.

However, Grinnell (27-15) was shut down the rest of the way as Belhaven (38-6) advanced to Friday's championship bracket game against fourth-seeded Greenville University.

Besides Chu and Schultz, others with hits for Grinnell were Taylor Durak '24 and Hannah Dykstra '25. Christin Hartman '24 was Grinnell's pitcher of decision, giving up six hits over 3.1 innings. She also struck out a batter to move up to fifth on the Pioneers' all-time list with 162.

Kathryn Vermeulen '24 finished off the game in the pitching circle and also fanned one. Also during the contest, Chu leaped to second on the Pioneers' all-time list for fielding assists with 288.
