GC softball team stretches winning streak to 10 with sweep of Lawrence

GRINNELL, Iowa - Grinnell College's softball team had to work for it, but in the end the Pioneers extended their winning streak to 10 games with a doubleheader sweep of Lawrence University Friday.

Christin Hartman '24 and Emma Trani '27 combined on a five-hit shutout as Grinnell blanked Lawrence 6-0 in the opener. Trani came on in relief in the second game and got the win as Grinnell rallied for an 8-6 decision.

Trani's save in the first game, which saw her toss no-hit ball and strike out two over the final three innings, tied Grinnell's season record of three saves. She has four saves in her career, also tying a school mark.

Grinnell outhit the Vikings 9-5 in the opener, with Kyra Killion '24 leading the way with three hits and Alexa Okada '24 with a pair.

The Pioneers put up three runs in the second inning as Hannah Dykstra '25 scored on a wild pitch and Okada sent a two-run double down the left-field line. In the third, Taylor Durak '24 hit an RBI double to left, Dykstra added a sacrifice fly to left and Killion knocked in a run with a single to left.

Grinnell (23-13, 12-2 Midwest Conference) needed a five-run rally in the sixth inning to secure the second game. The Pioneers had a 13-hit attack, with Durak getting three of those.

Grinnell got a run in the first on an error, but Lawrence (14-22, 5-11 MWC) went ahead with three runs in the second. The Pioneers scored solo runs in the second and third on Samantha Chu's '24 RBI double down the left-field line and Lizzy Vermeulen's '24 groundout.

Lawrence tacked on three runs in the fourth for a 6-3 lead and made that stick until the sixth. Chu began the scoring onslaught with a solo homer to left, Dykstra hit a sacrifice fly to left and Vermeulen gave Grinnell the lead with a two-run double down the left-field line. A bases-loaded walk by Okada completed the scoring.

Kathryn Vermeulen '24 pitched 3.1 innings and struck out three before Trani came on, giving up one hit and fanning one the rest of the way.

Chu and Durak, who have gone back and forth as Grinnell's career RBI leaders, are now tied with 127 apiece. Durak ranks sixth in career at-bats with 396, Kambria Anson '24 is seventh with 392 and Okada moved to 10th in doubles with 22. Dykstra moved to fourth for sacrifice flies with four, Killion is fourth for career caught stealing with 15 and Jasmine Oda '25 moved to seventh for putouts with 414.

Grinnell wraps up the regular season at home Saturday against Illinois College at 2 p.m. The event will also serve as Senior Day, with the ceremony beginning at approximately 1:40 p.m.
