Grinnell takes it to Blueboys in opener of 3-game baseball set

GRINNELL, Iowa - Grinnell College's baseball team broke out to an early lead and then poured it on as the Pioneers roared past Illinois College 13-3 in the opening game of a three-game set Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Park.

Grinnell (8-13 Midwest Conference, 15-22 overall) pounded out 15 hits and got a stellar one-two pitching punch from Ian Feld '25 and Jakob Runkel '26.

Sean Richardson '24 had three of Grinnell's hits, while Mac McCain '25, Ethan Crawford '25, Joe Chanis '27 and Nathan McCurdy '25 had two apiece.

Feld and Runkel, who both reached the career 100-strikeout milestone during the day, were strong throughout. Feld, who picked up the victory, tossed six-hit ball and fanned eight in six innings. Runkel fanned five over the final two innings.

Connor Goodson '26 knocked in a run in the first inning and Crawford belted a two-run homer to center in the second for a 3-0 lead.

Illinois College (7-14 MWC, 20-17 overall) got a run in the fourth, but the Pioneers opened things up with three runs in the fifth and another in the sixth. Ben Kelly '25 bashed a three-run homer to left in the fifth and McCain had an RBI double to left-center in the sixth for a 7-1 lead.

The Blueboys scored twice in the top of the seventh, but Grinnell countered with five in the bottom on a two-run single by Chanis down the left-field line, Richardson's and McCain's bases-loaded walks and RBI groundout by Goodson. Richardson's RBI single down the right-field line in the eighth inning ended the game via the mercy rule.

During the day, McCain moved up to fourth on Grinnell's career chart for hits (162), doubles (36) and total bases (240). Crawford is fifth in homers with 17 and Richardson 10th in walks with 58.

The teams meet again at Pioneer Park Sunday for a doubleheader, starting at 11 a.m. Senior Day activities for Grinnell will be between games.
