Grinnell women's tennis team puches ticket to another NCAA D-III Tournament

MADISON, Wis. - Grinnell College's women's tennis team advanced to another NCAA Division III Tournament, and set a school record in the process.

The Pioneers broke the program record for victories in a season with 22 as they shut down Lake Forest College 5-1 in the title match of the Midwest Conference Team Tournament Saturday afternoon at Hitters Sportsplex.

The tourney title clinched the NCAA berth, which is Grinnell's fourth in a row and 13th overall. The 23rd-ranked Pioneers will find out their regional site and opponent Monday during the selection show.

In the championship match, Grinnell broke out to a 2-1 lead in doubles with victories by Ioanna Giannakou '24-Lily Perrin '25 at No. 1 (8-1) and Isa Voinescu '26-Paige Sargent '27 at No. 3 (8-0).

Utsah KalraThe Pioneers finished things off by winning Nos. 4 through 6 singles with Sargent (6-0, 6-1), Utsah Kalra '25 (6-0, 6-0) and Erin Jarvis '25 (6-1, 6-1).

The win marked Grinnell's 39th in a row against MWC foes, dating back to the 2018-19 season.

Grinnell started the day with a 5-0 blanking of Illinois College, winning three matches by walkover and also taking victories at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles with the duos of Giannakou-Perrin (8-0) and Irene Agusti-Jarvis (8-3).

At 22-4, Grinnell eclipsed the previous school record of 21 victories in 2021-22.

With their victories, Giannakou moved up to fourth on Grinnell's career doubles victories chart with 65. Perrin is 10th with 58 and Jarvis 22nd with 48. In singles play, Kalra now ranks 14th with 49 wins.

Kalra moved up to 15th on Grinnell's single-season singles victories list with 20 while Perrin and Sargent rank 15th and 23rd, respectively, in doubles victories with 21 and 20.

Also during the day's action, Kalra (inset photo) was awarded the prestigious Elite 20 Award. The Elite 20 award goes to the student-athlete competing at the meet with the highest cumulative GPA. The award recognizes the commitment of the student-athlete toward the pursuit of excellence in both the athletic and academic realms as measured by reaching the pinnacle of competition within the league while also achieving the highest academic standard among their peers.
