ST. LOUIS, Mo. – For the fourth year in a row, Grinnell College's women's tennis team has moved beyond the opening round of the NCAA Division III Tournament.
The Pioneers accomplished that feat Thursday morning by blanking Principia College 5-0 at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center. Grinnell added to its school-record victory total by improving to 23-4 on the season.
The Pioneers, ranked 23
rd nationally, got off to a strong start with a doubles sweep by the duos of
Ioanna Giannakou '24-
Lily Perrin '25 (8-4),
Irene Agusti '24-
Erin Jarvis '25 (8-5) and
Paige Sargent '27-
Isa Voinescu '26 (8-4).
Grinnell finished off the win as
Utsah Kalra '25 won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 singles and Jarvis posted a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 4. Perrin, Voinescu and
Nichole Henning '26 were all leading their singles match when the Pioneers clinched the victory.
Kalra's singles win was her 21
st this season, which ranks 14
th in program history. On the doubles front, Perrin claimed her 22
nd doubles win of the season which is ninth all-time, Sargent gained her 21
st which ranks 15
th and Voinescu got her 20
th which is 24
th.
Kalra now has 50 career singles wins which is 14
th all-time, while Giannakou's 66 doubles wins are third and just five shy of the school record. Perrin has 59 career doubles wins which is 10
th and Jarvis has 49 doubles victories which ranks 20
th.
Grinnell will meet sixth-ranked and regional host Washington University at 10 a.m. Friday. Principia finished its campaign with a 12-7 record.
