Grinnell shoots out to early lead before settling for tie with Central

GRINNELL, Iowa - It was a tale of two halves at Tuesday's Grinnell College-Central College men's soccer contest at Springer Field.

Grinnell (1-1-2) dominated the opening 45 minutes, outshooting the visitors 9-3 while breaking out to a 2-0 lead. But Central (2-1-1) rallied in the final half to secure a 2-2 draw.

The Pioneers broke a scoreless tie in the 16th minute when Samuel Gojjam '27 scored his first goal of the season on a double assist by Soma Suzuki '25 and Ezra Gould '27. Gould began the beautiful scoring play when he delivered a pass to Suzuki from the left side to just outside the top of the box. Suzuki promptly headed the ball to left and into the box, where Gojjam collected it and fired a low liner into the bottom right portion of the net. It was the fifth goal of Gojjam's career.

Jake Brecknock '28 upped Grinnell's lead to 2-0 in the 41st minute with his first collegiate goal, with the double assist going to Dylan Maddux '25 and Jaxon Willoughby '26. Maddux faked out his defender in the left side of the box and sent a perfect cross toward the front of the goal. Willoughby one-touched it over to Brecknock, who was charging hard and tapped it past the keeper from close range.

Grinnell won the shots battle 12-11, with Gojjam taking four shots, Demi Oni '27 adding two and Gould, Suzuki, Beacan Mottl '28, Jack Pennachio '28, Zachary Johnson '28 and Brecknock adding one apiece.

Caden O'Neill '28, seeing his first collegiate action at the keeper spot for Grinnell, made one save while earning the tie.

Grinnell has a big trip to Minnesota approaching, playing at Carleton College on Saturday and Macalester College on Sunday. Macalester is receiving votes for the national rankings.
