Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Ted Schultz

Late Grinnell rally falls just short in soccer setback to Millikin

GRINNELL, Iowa - Trailing by two goals late in Monday's match against Millikin University, the Grinnell College men's soccer team suddenly gained momentum.

Demi Oni '27 scored his first collegiate goal on ricocheted free kick following a red card in the 82nd minute, and the Pioneers fought valiantly with a one-man advantage down the stretch. But in the end, the Big Blue (1-1) escaped Springer Field with a 2-1 non-conference victory.

After being outshot 8-5 in the first half and trailing 2-0 at the break, the Pioneers (0-1-1) made some noise in the final 45 minutes. They equaled Millikin's shot total of seven in the last half and earned five corners in that span compared to just one for the visitors.

The Big Blue's lead was cut in half following a red card on their keeper. Samuel Gojjam '27 lofted the ensuing free kick from 7 yards in front of the box, and the ball bounced off the crossbar. Oni charged in and headed the rebound into the right side of the net for the score. It was the second assist of Gojjam's career.

Of Grinnell's 12 shots, Gojjam and Jack Pennachio '28 each had three, while Oni and Beacan Mottl '28 added two shots each. Jaxon Willoughby '26 and Soma Suzuki '25 tallied one shot each.

Grinnell keeper Jayson Kunkel '26 recorded one save on the day.

The Pioneers host the second of three consecutive home matches Sunday when Eureka College visits Springer Field. Action begins at 3 p.m.
