GC men's soccer team collects first victory of the season with 1-0 blanking of Eureka

GRINNELL, Iowa - After opening the 2024 campaign with a tie and loss, Grinnell College's men's soccer team broke into the win column by toppling Eureka College 1-0 Sunday afternoon at Springer Field.

Keeper Jayson Kunkel '26 earned his second shutout of the year as the Pioneers' keeper, and Dylan Maddux '25 got all the scoring Grinnell needed with a goal early in the second half.

After battling to a scoreless tie through the first 45 minutes, Grinnell dented the scoreboard in the 57th minute when Maddux cashed in on the 13th goal of his career. Billy Cherres '26 began the series when he received a pass to the left side of the box. He spun around his defender, fired a left-footed cross into the box that Maddux headed into the left side of the net. It was the first assist of the season for Cherres, who has seven in his career.

Kunkel posted three saves while earning his third career shutout.

Grinnell (1-1-1) won the shots battle 10-8 and beat Eureka (1-4) in corners by a 5-3 margin. Samuel Gojjam '27, Demi Oni '27 and Maddux all had two shots for Grinnell, while Ryan Huang '26, Ian O'Loughlin '28, Soma Suzuki '25 and Beacan Mottl '28 added one apiece.

The Pioneers are home again Tuesday when Central College visits Springer Field. Kickoff is 4:30 p.m.
