Grinnell rallies from 2-goal deficit to forge tie with Lake Forest

GRINNELL, Iowa - A 2-0 deficit may seem a tough task to overcome, but the Grinnell College men's soccer team was up to the challenge.

After spotting Lake Forest College two goals in the first half, the Pioneers rolled up three of their own before a late Forester score resulted in a 3-all tie Saturday at Springer Field.

The tie ended Grinnell's four-match losing streak to the defending MWC Tournament champs in the league opener for both teams.

The Foresters scored back-to-back goals in the 26th and 33rd minutes for a 2-0 lead, but Dylan Maddux '25 got a goal 40 seconds before halftime to cut the gap in half. The goal, which was assisted by Demi Oni '27, was Maddux's team-high third of the season. Oni chased down the ball in the right corner and delivered a perfect cross into the box, which Maddux fired past the diving keeper into the net. It was Maddux's 15th career goal.

Facing a stiff wind in the second half, Grinnell (2-3-4) rose to the occasion. Jaxon Willoughby '26 tied it in the 53rd minute on an assist by Ryan Huang '26. Huang began the sequence by lofting a ball from the upper right corner of the box that the keeper temporarily got his hands on before slipping through. Willoughby was there to clean it up, though, tapping the ball in from a few yards out for the easy goal. It was Willoughby's first goal of the season and seventh in his career.
Twelve minutes after Grinnell tied it, Zak Serby '25 put the Pioneers in front with an unassisted goal. There was a battle for the ball 10 yards in front of the box before Serby gained control and sent a perfectly-placed shot past the diving keeper and into the lower left corner of the net. It was his first goal of the season and second in his career.

Grinnell hung onto its lead until just under a minute to go when Lake Forest (1-6-3) found the back of the net.

Lake Forest held a 15-14 edge in shots, with Willoughby taking four shots for Grinnell, Oni three and Samuel Gojjam '27 a pair. Huang, Maddux, Soma Suzuki '25, Beacan Mottl '28 and Serby added one apiece.

Grinnell keeper Jayson Kunkel '26 made six saves.

The Pioneers are back in action Tuesday when Knox College visits Springer Field. Kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m.
