Grinnell earns sweep of Buena Vista in first road test of 2024 campaign

STORM LAKE, Iowa - The venue was different for the Grinnell College volleyball team, but the result was the same.

After starting the season with four home victories over the weekend, the Pioneer netters took to the road to face non-conference foe Buena Vista University. Grinnell made quick work of the hosts, winning 3-0 to improve to 5-0 for the first time since 2019.

Grinnell, which owns a five-match winning streak against the Beavers, won by scores of 25-20, 25-17 and 25-23. The Pioneers continued their string of defensive toughness at the net, limiting the hosts to a .094 hitting efficiency.

Keira Sullivan '27 had 10 kills for Grinnell, while Jenna Keller '25, Hayley Taka '26 and Millie Leonard '27 each had seven. Emily Brewer '25 and Kylie-Ann Smith '27 tallied 17 and 15 assists, respectively, while Sophie Weber '25 had 24 digs to move to 10th on Grinnell's all-time chart with 1,120. Leonard added two aces.

Grinnell used a four-point run in the first set to turn a 9-8 lead into a 13-8 cushion. Gabby Choy '26, Taka and Leonard all had kills during the spurt as Grinnell cruised to victory.

The Pioneers were never challenged in the second set, as Keller served the first four points and Weber added a five-point service run later.

The third set was tight throughout, with the 1-4 Beavers leading 22-21 before consecutive blocks by Sullivan and Taka put Grinnell ahead by one. After Buena Vista tied it, Sullivan recorded a kill and then served the match point.

Grinnell will face the University of Wisconsin-Platteville and Coe College Friday at the Mable Lee Tournament in Cedar Rapids.
