GC volleyball team steamrolls squad receiving votes for national rankings

Pioneer netters sweep American Rivers Conference favorite Coe in 3 sets

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Coe College may be receiving votes for the national volleyball rankings and picked to win the American Rivers Conference title, but that didn't faze Grinnell College in the slightest.

The Pioneers posted one of their most notable victories in program history, sweeping the Kohawks at Coe's Mabel Lee Tournament by scores of 25-21, 25-17 and 25-19 Friday night. It was the Grinnell's first win over the Kohawks since 2003 and what is believed to be the first win over a team receiving votes for the national rankings in program history.

Grinnell dominated at the net, hitting .228 while holding Coe to just a .120 efficiency. The Pioneers also won the aces battle 7-2.

The Pioneers rallied from a 12-9 gap in the first set with a 7-1 run and led from there. A late run in the second set was huge for Grinnell, outscoring Coe 6-1 to turn a 17-15 lead into a 23-16 margin. In the third set, the Pioneers led 12-11 before opening things up with a four-point run that included kills by All-Tournament Team selection Millie Leonard '27 and Jenna Keller '25 and ace by Gracie Lim '28. Grinnell cruised from there, securing the victory on Leonard's kill.

Keller had 12 kills and Leonard added 11 while hitting a crushing .647. Emily Brewer '25 dished out 26 assists and served up four aces, while Leonard, Hayley Taka '26 and Ella O'Neill '25 all had two blocks. Sophie Weber '25 led the digs category with 16, Taka had 11 and Lim posted 10.

Earlier in the day, Grinnell lost a 25-16, 25-15, 25-20 decision to unbeaten University of Wisconsin-Platteville. Brewer and Kylie-Ann Smith '27 each had 10 assists and Amelia Adam '25 served two aces. O'Neill had three blocks.

Grinnell is now 6-1, its best start since 2019. The Pioneers entertain Nebraska Wesleyan University at 6 p.m. Wednesday in Darby Gymnasium.
