Grinnell women's soccer team rallies past Mount Mercy for 2-1 victory

GRINNELL, Iowa - Trailing 1-0 with just over 25 minutes remaining, Grinnell College's women's soccer team didn't panic in the slightest.

Instead, the Pioneers reeled off two goals in a span of 16 minutes to rally for a 2-1 victory over Mount Mercy University Friday at Springer Field. Grinnell improved to 2-1 with the win, while the Mustangs dipped to 0-2-1.

The contest was scoreless at halftime before the visitors tallied a goal in the 57th minute. Seven minutes later, a foul in the penalty box after a breakaway gave Grinnell a chance to tie it. Maddie Beltramo '25 answered the call, drilling a shot past the keeper into the lower left portion of the net to tie the match. It was Beltramo's first career goal.

In the 80th minute, Grinnell rose to the occasion again when Maya Mozena '28 scored the second goal of her collegiate career. Ramona Delborne '26 earned the assist, firing a pass from the right sideline into Mozena, who was at the top of the box. Mozena worked around a defender and fired the ball from just outside the upper right corner of the box past the diving keeper and into the left side of the net. It was Delborne's second career assist.

Peyton Dixon '27 earned the win at keeper, turning away seven shots. Grinnell won the shots battle 15-12, with Ella Hunt '26, Rama Joshi '27, Mozena and Amelia Dueñas '26 all taking a pair of shots.

Grinnell heads to Winona, Minn., Sunday to play Saint Mary's University. The Pioneers' next home contest is Wednesday against Simpson College.
