Grinnell pulls out thrilling victory in overtime at Beloit

Nick Lundy provides game-winning layup for Pioneers

BELOIT, Wis. - Grinnell College's men's basketball team had to work overtime Tuesday night, but it was well worth it as the Pioneers came away with a 105-104 thrilling victory over Beloit College.

The Pioneers' victory, coupled with Monmouth College's loss, opened up a 1-½ game lead in the Midwest Conference standings. Grinnell moved to 6-1 in the MWC and 13-3 overall.

Nick Lundy '27 proved to be the hero Tuesday, making a reverse layup on Gabe Garcia's '27 assist in the waning seconds of overtime for a 105-104 lead. Beloit called timeout with just 1 second left, but was unable to get off a shot as the Pioneers broke into celebration.

Grinnell is getting into the habit of winning thrillers, pulling out a two-point home victory over Ripon College just last Wednesday.

Harris Dar '28 scored a career-high 24 points for the Pioneers with strong 9-of-14 shooting from the field. Gabe Garcia '27 poured in 20 points, Lundy had 16, Kai Te Huki '27 added 15 and Sean Murphy '26 poured in 10. Garcia's performance was aided by 12-of-14 shooting from the free throw line.

Lundy and Tolu Johnson '25 each had seven rebounds, Garcia dished out four assists and Dar and Jackson Leone '25 came up with four steals apiece.

Grinnell had its work cut out for itself after falling behind by eight points with 5:37 left in regulation. A free throw by Garcia and trey from Leone quickly made that a four-point gap.

The Pioneers were still behind by five with 1:31 left, but Te Huki worked for a layup and Garcia two free throws to bring the visitors within 84-83. After a free throw by Beloit, Garcia made a layup with 14 seconds left to force an 85-all tie. Beloit missed a 3-pointer with 4 seconds left, and the Pioneers missed a last-ditch trey attempt to force overtime.

There were five ties in overtime before Beloit, 2-5 in the MWC and 6-9 overall, pulled ahead 102-99 with 50 seconds left. Garcia was fouled 5 seconds later and made both shots, making it a one-point game.

Dar later got a steal and drove for a layup, putting the Pioneers on top 103-102. Beloit countered with a basket with 19 seconds left and, after a timeout, the Pioneers worked the ball around before Garcia found Lundy for the game-winner.

Grinnell has more than a week off before hosting Monmouth next Wednesday in Darby Gymnasium. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
