Pioneers set 5 of 8 new marks established Friday

Results

GRINNELL, Iowa - In its nearly 60-year history, the men's side of the Grinnell Invitational has not seen many days like the opening day of the 2025 session.

A whopping eight meet records were broken Friday at Russell K. Osgood Pool, including five by the host Pioneers.

Grinnell's records, three in relays and two in individual events, allowed the Pioneers to grab the early lead in the team standings with 654.5 points. That is easily in front of runner-up St. Ambrose University, which has 469.

Kevin Fitzgerald '25, Noah Tsukuda '27 and Evan Feilmeyer '28 all had a hand in two of the record-breaking performances. Fitzgerald won the 200-yard individual medley in 1 minute, 52.36 seconds, beating his previous meet mark of 1:53.55 set last year. He teamed with Rommin Adl '26, Aidan Donovan '28 and Adam Feilmeyer '25 to set a meet mark in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:23.97. That bettered the old mark of 1:24.83 set by Augustana College in 2023 and ranks third in program history.

Tsukuda swam the third-fastest 500 freestyle time in program history while winning the event in 4:37.22, beating the meet mark of 4:37.33 by Mark Addison of Augustana in 2023. Tsukuda also teamed with Cadel Saszik '28, Sam Larsen '25 and Evan Feilmeyer to win the 800 freestyle relay in 7:03.79. That broke the meet record of 7:05.39 established last year by Grinnell.

Feilmeyer had Grinnell's other meet record Friday, winning the 200 butterfly in 1:51.52. The previous mark was 1:52.68 by Garrett Cadotte of Nebraska Wesleyan from 2018.

Grinnell had two more wins Friday, those coming from Adl in the 100 backstroke in 50.66 and the 400 medley relay team of Saszik, Benke Grobler '27, Evan Feilmeyer and Adl in 3:27.47, a time that ranks seventh in program history.

Runners-up for Grinnell were Saszik in the 100 backstroke (50.91) and Fitzgerald in the 100 freestyle (45.83), while Evan Feilmeyer was third in the 500 freestyle (4:46.51). Feilmeyer's time of 4:45.18 in the prelims ranks 15th in program history.

Taking fourth were Larsen in the 100 backstroke (52.41), Grobler in the 200 breaststroke (2:10.71), Donovan in the 100 freestyle (47.01) and Antoni Staszkiewicz '27 in the 200 butterfly (1:57.37). Sixth place went to Donovan in the 100 individual medley (55.23), Staszkiewicz in the 500 freestyle (4:56.61), Cooper Malone '25 in the 200 breaststroke (2:12.51) and Adl in the 100 freestyle (47.21).

The meet continues at 9 a.m. Saturday.
