Scorching-hot long-range shooting propels Grinnell women past Monmouth

Pioneers' 3-point percentage ranks 5th in program history

GRINNELL, Iowa - The recent weather in Iowa has been bitterly cold, but the Grinnell College women's basketball team was red-hot in Darby Gymnasium Wednesday.

The Pioneers scorched the nets with 48.1 percent shooting from 3-point land, the fifth-best percentage in program history and best since a 2010 game, on its way to an 82-62 victory over Monmouth College.

Grinnell, which has won four of its last five games and owns a three-game winning streak against the Fighting Scots, improved to 5-3 in the Midwest Conference with the key league victory. Grinnell is 11-6 overall.

The Pioneers not only had a season-high 11 steals, but a season-best 13 3-pointers on 27 attempts.

Grinnell featured a balanced scoring attack, with Nikki Ware '25 scoring 15 with the aid of 4-of-8 shooting from beyond the arc. Sara Booher '25 posted yet another double-double with12 points and 10 boards, Skylar Thomas '26 scored 11 points and Cassidy Pak '28 had 10. Amelia Rigel '28 added a career-best nine points.

Bailey Strovers '27 matched Booher's rebound total with 10 and also had a career-best four assists, the same total as Ware. Booher blocked four shots and Strovers, Thomas and Grace Marsh '25 came up with two steals apiece.

Booher now has 62 blocks this season, which ranks fifth in program history, and Ware boosted her career 3-point total to 131, which is fifth all-time.

It was tight the entire first period with Monmouth, 1-7 in the MWC and 4-13 overall, leading 17-16 at its conclusion. Grinnell opened it up in the second frame, taking the lead for good at 20-18 on a layup by Thomas with 6:47 left. The Pioneers were up by two with 1:31 left before finishing strong, as Adriana Perez '28 drained a 3-pointer and Thomas got a layup for a 32-25 halftime lead.

The Fighting Scots got as close as four midway through the third quarter, but the Pioneers responded in admirable fashion with a 13-point run. Thomas and Nora Lynch '28 began things with layups, and Lynch added a trey for a 44-33 lead. Ware followed with a four-point play after getting fouled on a 3-pointer, and Pak made a layup for a 50-33 edge.

Grinnell led 58-37 after three quarters and never looked back. The Pioneers are on the road this weekend, meeting MWC co-leader Ripon College at 1 p.m. Saturday. The Pioneers are the lone team to defeat the Red Hawks in league play this season.
