GC women even Midwest Conference mark with historic victory at Lake Forest

Point total, margin of victory is Pioneers' largest ever on Foresters' floor

LAKE FOREST, Ill. - A long winter break layoff of three-plus weeks didn't faze Grinnell College's women's basketball team in the slightest as it opened the 2025 portion of its campaign on the road at Lake Forest College.

The Pioneers shot out to a 16-8 lead by the end of the first period Saturday afternoon on their way to a 73-61 victory over the Foresters. The 12-point margin of victory is Grinnell's largest ever in Lake Forest's gym. The Pioneers have won four times on the Foresters' floor, including two of the last three meetings.

Additionally, 72 points is the most Grinnell has scored at Lake Forest in a series dating back to 1990. The win pushed Grinnell to 2-2 in the Midwest Conference and 8-5 in all games, while Lake Forest fell to 1-2 in the league and 2-9 overall.

Bailey Strovers '27, who scored a career-high 23 points for the Pioneers, also posted her fifth double-double of the season with 12 rebounds. Sara Booher '25 added her sixth double-double of 2024-25 with 14 points and an identical amount of boards. Other top scorers were Nikki Ware '25 with 14 points and Reese Stephens '27 with a career-best six.

Other career-highs came from Skylar Thomas '26 (nine rebounds), Cassidy Pak '28 (four assists) and Booher (three steals).

Grinnell owned the boards, holding a 51-36 edge over the hosts. The Pioneers also held Lake Forest to 35.3 percent shooting from the field.

The Pioneers benefitted from a huge scoring run in an eight-minute stretch spanning the first and second quarters. With the visitors trailing 7-4, Strovers made a layup and Nora Lynch '28 a 3-pointer to give Grinnell a lead it would never relinquish. Ware added two free throws, Strovers converted a traditional three-point play and then made a jumper for a 16-7 edge.

Lake Forest made a free throw prior to the end of the period, but the Pioneers picked things up as Ware hit a 3-pointer and Strovers two free throws for a 21-8 lead at the 8:18 mark of the second quarter.

Lake Forest closed within 31-25 by halftime, but Grinnell started the third quarter on a strong note with nine unanswered points. Booher began the half with a layup, Strovers made a 3-pointer and layup and Grace Marsh '25 converted a close-range shot for a 40-25 edge.

Grinnell was never threatened after that on its way to the key league victory.

The Pioneers have a huge test awaiting them Wednesday when six-time defending MWC champion Ripon College visits Darby Gymnasium. Tip-off is 5:30 p.m.
