Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Ted Schultz

Grinnell breaks through with 2nd-half goal to dispose of Monmouth men's soccer team

GRINNELL, Iowa - Dominating both sides of the ball, it was only a matter of time before the Grinnell College men's soccer team broke through.

That time came 12 minutes into the second half, when a spectacular shot by Jake Brecknock '28 broke a scoreless tie as the Pioneers held on to defeat Monmouth College 1-0 on a beautiful Wednesday afternoon at Springer Field.

The goal, assisted by Ryan Huang '26, propelled Grinnell to a 2-0 record in the Midwest Conference for the first time since 2022. The Pioneers improved to 3-5-3 overall.

Grinnell matched its season-high shot total of 25 while limiting Monmouth, which dropped to 0-2 in the league and 3-4-2 overall, to eight shots.

The Pioneers held a 14-5 edge in shots in the first half alone, but the score remained deadlocked at nil. That all changed in the 57th minute when Brecknock converted his first goal of the season and second in his career. On the play, Huang gained possession of the ball on the right side of the field and delivered a pass into Brecknock just off the upper right corner of the box.

Brecknock took a few touches, faked left, went right deeper toward the end line and then took a right-footed 25-yard shot that was perfectly placed into the upper left portion of the net. It was Huang's second assist of the season.

Jack Alexander '29 worked the entire game at keeper for Grinnell and made three saves. It was his second shutout of the season.

On the shots front, Samuel Gojjam '27 took 12 shots, Brecknock had three and Jack Pennachio '28, Demi Oni '27 and Jaxon Willoughby '276 added two apiece. Beacan Mottl '28, Oliver Northing '26, Oliver Klemm '29 and Zander Salva '29 had one shot each.

The Pioneers entertain Ripon College Saturday at Springer Field, with kickoff set for 1:30 p.m. The event will also serve as Senior Day, with ceremonies slated for approximately 1:15 p.m.
