Grinnell men's soccer team celebrates Senior Day with victory to remain perfect in MWC play

GRINNELL, Iowa - The Grinnell College men's soccer team came up big on Senior Day, rolling over Ripon College 4-1 on a warm Saturday afternoon at Springer Field.

The victory puts Grinnell at 3-0 in the Midwest Conference for the first time since 2022. The Pioneers, 4-5-3 overall, posted a season-high total for goals while running their winning streak to three.

Samuel Gojjam '27 scored two goals for Grinnell, while Demi Oni '27 and Oliver Northing '26 added one each.

Oni put Grinnell on the board just six minutes in, his second goal this season and fourth in his career. On a counter play, Jaxon Willoughby '26 raced down the left side of the field, faked out his opponent and worked a pass to Jack Pennachio '28. Pennachio took one touch and passed it through to Oni, who raced into the box and beat the keeper with a shot to the left side of the net.

The score remained 1-0 through halftime and well into the second stanza when the Pioneers erupted for three goals in 12 minutes while playing a man down. In the 76th minute, Gojjam used a strong south wind to his advantage. Shooting a corner kick from the right side, he perfectly booted the ball in front of the net that the Ripon keeper temporarily touched before it trickled into the net.

Just 20 seconds later, Grinnell struck again when Northing recorded his fifth goal of the season and 20th in his career. After Ripon went into Grinnell territory following the kickoff, the Pioneers regained possession. Pennachio gained control at midfield and brought the ball into the Red Hawks' territory. He sent a pass to his right to Northing, who took one touch and delivered a shot into the net.

With less than two minutes to go, Gojjam scored his second goal of 2025 and 13th in his career. Ezra Gould '27 took the ball a long way downfield along the left sideline, faked out his defender and found Gojjam sprinting down the middle of the field. Gojjam worked his way into the left side of the box, and nearing the end line, angled a line drive past the diving keeper into the right side of the net.

The Pioneers owned a 12-7 edge in shots, including 6-4 lead in shots on goal. Northing had three shots, while Pennachio, Oni and Gojjam added two apiece. Taking one shot each were Emmett Krez '29, Willoughby and Oliver Klemm '29.

Jack Alexander '29 and Jayson Kunkel '26 shared keeper duties for Grinnell, with Alexander making two saves and Kunkel one.

Grinnell travels to Mount Vernon on Tuesday to face Cornell College. Kickoff is at 4 p.m.
