GC women's soccer team posts another key Midwest Conference victory

Pioneers roll over Beloit College 3-1

GRINNELL, Iowa - Grinnell College's women's soccer team kept the good times rolling Tuesday afternoon, posting its second Midwest Conference victory in a row with a dominating 3-1 victory over Beloit College.

A career day by Keiko Smith '26 at Springer Field and masterful defensive performance sparked by keeper Peyton Dixon '27, Grinnell improved to 2-1-2 in the league while evening its overall record at 5-5-4.

Smith had a goal and two assists and was joined in the scoring parade by classmate Ramona Delborne '26 as well as Maya Mozena '28.

The Pioneers enjoyed a 13-6 edge in shots, including 10-1 margin in the first half. Smith and Delborne got three apiece, Campbell Swaim '28 and Mozena took two apiece and Sarah Travis '27, Teya Lochridge '29 and Amelia Dueñas '26 contributed one each.

The Pioneers grabbed a 2-0 halftime lead when Smith scored in the eighth minute on an assist by Dueñas and Mozena punched in a goal 10 minutes later on Smith's assist.

On Smith's goal, Dueñas gained control of the ball as she approached the box and sent a perfect through ball to the right to Smith. Smith one-touched the ball and sent a high-arcing shot over the keeper's head into the net.

Mozena then scored when Smith chased down a ball on the right side, took a few touches while scanning the field and delivered a perfect cross into Mozena in front of the net. Mozena beat the approaching keeper to the ball and tapped it into the net from short range.

In the second half, Delborne gave Grinnell a 3-0 lead 23 minutes in. Smith approached the box, took a few touches and delivered a pass to Delborne who was racing down the right side toward the goal. She gained control and delivered a line drive far post into the net.

Dixon, who made four saves, preserved the shutout until the Bucs scored with just over a minute to go. With the loss, Beloit fell to 1-4-1 in the league and 2-10-2 overall.

Grinnell is back in action Saturday when Illinois College visits for the Pioneers' final regular-season home contest. Action begins at 1 p.m.
