Grinnell battles Beloit men to 1-all draw in meeting of MWC upper-division squads

GRINNELL, Iowa - In a battle befitting two teams near the top of the Midwest Conference standings, Grinnell College's men's soccer team played Beloit College to a 1-all draw Wednesday afternoon at Springer Field.

With the decision, Grinnell moved to 3-1-1 in the league and Beloit to 3-1-2. Overall, the Pioneers are 4-6-4 and Beloit is 6-6-4.

Despite the outcome, the Pioneers owned the stat sheet by outshooting Beloit 23-6, including 7-3 in shots on goal. In corner kicks, Grinnell held a 9-3 edge.

After a scoreless first half, things got interesting in the second half. The physicality of the matchup picked up as Beloit gained a 1-0 lead in the 51st minute.

Grinnell saw multiple scoring opportunities fall just shy before Samuel Gojjam '27 ended the drought with a goal in the 83rd minute on Ryan Huang's '26 assist. On the play, Huang raced down the right side of the field and crossed into Gojjam at the top of the box. Gojjam took a few touches and fired a low line drive into the bottom right side of the net. It was Gojjam's fourth goal of the season and 15th in his career, while the assist was Huang's team-high third.

Gojjam had nine of Grinnell's shots, Oliver Northing '26 posted four and Jack Pennachio '28 took three. Demi Oni '27, Jimmy Miseda '26 and Kanata Mizutani '28 each had two shots and Jaxon Willoughby '26 took one.

On the goal keeper front, Grinnell's Jack Alexander '29 made two saves.

The Pioneers have another key MWC contest Saturday when Illinois College visits Springer Field. Kickoff is slated for 3:30 p.m.
