Pioneer men's soccer team battles to tie with IC in physical match

GRINNELL, Iowa - Always a physical and intense battle, Saturday's matchup between the Grinnell College and Illinois College men's soccer teams lived up to its billing Saturday afternoon at Springer Field.

The teams fought to a 1-all tie in a key Midwest Conference match, which put Grinnell at 3-1-2 in the league and 4-6-5 overall. Illinois College moved to 2-2-3 in the MWC and 7-3-5 in all games.

After the teams played to a 0-all draw for the entire first half and most of the second, Grinnell's Ian O'Loughlin '28 broke the deadlock with a goal in the 77th minute on Demi Oni's '27 team-high third assist. On the play, Oni sent a cross from the right side into the box that found its way to O'Loughlin. O'Loughlin gave it one touch and fired a line drive past the diving keeper into the upper right part of the net for his third career goal.

That lead held until there were just 35 seconds left when the Blueboys were awarded a penalty kick after a collision in the box. The kick was good, resulting in the tie.

Each team was credited with 10 shots, while the Blueboys held a 4-2 edge in corners. O'Loughlin had four of Grinnell's shots and Samuel Gojjam '27 and Oliver Northing '26 had two apiece. Jack Pennachio '28 and Henry Lisko '29 added one each.

Grinnell keeper Jack Alexander '29 posted one save.

The Pioneers have a week off before playing at Lake Forest College next Saturday. Kickoff is 1:30 p.m.
