Grinnell football team makes its presence known against MWC co-leader Chicago

GRINNELL, Iowa - Though the final score didn't necessarily reflect it, the stat sheet showed Grinnell College's football team proved to be an incredibly difficult foe for Midwest Conference co-leader University of Chicago Saturday afternoon.

Playing under gray skies that later gave way to light rain at Rosenbloom Field, the Pioneers held the Maroons to their lowest offensive yardage output so far in league play and got a huge rushing performance from Lucky Carton '27 in a 38-7 victory by the visitors.

Grinnell limited the Maroons to just 230 yards, nearly 100 yards below their season average, while gaining 229 yards themselves. Carton provided Grinnell with its first 100-yard plus rushing performance of the season with a career-high 106 yards on 20 carries.

Grinnell quarterback Stephen Bailey '29 completed a season-high 15 passes for 122 yards and also caught a TD pass on a trick play. Jack Reed '27 caught seven passes for 50 yards and also had a touchdown throw.

Defensively, Luke Konczal '29 had 11 tackles, Benton Tso '29 and Adam Whalen '28 added seven apiece and Javi Rodriguez '28 and Peyton Williams '27 tallied five each. The totals by Tso and Rodriguez were career-highs.

A 50-yard field goal by Chicago's Walter Kilgore that bounced off the upright and cross bar provided the first points of the game. The Maroons built their lead to 10-0 by the end of the first period before Grinnell (1-5 MWC, 1-6 overall) put together a 14-play, 83-yard drive midway through the second period to cut the gap to 10-7. Carton had rushes of 14 and 30 yards on the series and Bailey found Vincent Shen '29 with a 16-yard pass down to the Maroons' 10-yard line.

Two rushes by Carton pushed the ball down the 4-yard line before an incomplete pass brought up fourth down. Bailey took the snap and handed to Bennett Destino '27 cutting from right to left, who then flipped to Reed crossing from left to right. In the meantime, Bailey found his way to the right corner of the end zone where he caught Reed's pass while falling to the ground for a touchdown. Ben Bortel '29 kicked the point after.

Grinnell's defense then stepped up, forcing a Maroon punt. The Pioneers were then stopped on their series and forced to punt, but the kick was blocked and recovered in the end zone as the visitors grabbed a 17-7 lead.

Chicago intercepted a pass on Grinnell's first play of the ensuing drive and scored right before half, taking a 24-7 lead into the
locker room.

Chicago (6-0 MWC, 6-1 overall) added touchdowns in both the third and fourth quarters to account for the final score.

Grinnell takes to the road next weekend to face Illinois College.
