Grinnell snaps 12-match drought on Lake Forest's court with 3-set volleyball sweep

Pioneers post first - and only - win on Foresters' floor since 2002

LAKE FOREST, Ill. - The last time Grinnell College's volleyball team beat Lake Forest on the Foresters' floor, not a single player on this year's Pioneer roster had been born.

But that all changed Friday night, as the Pioneers snapped a 12-match drought at Lake Forest with a three-set sweep in Midwest Conference play.

The Pioneers, whose last and only win at Lake Forest prior to Friday occurred on Nov. 2, 2002, won by scores of 25-17, 25-16, 25-16. That marked Grinnell's second consecutive sweep of the Foresters.

Grinnell (2-0 MWC, 6-10 overall) dominated at the net, owning a .280 hitting efficiency while holding the hosts to a .053 percentage. The Pioneers also held a 9-5 edge in ace serves and posted 43 kills compared to just 19 for Lake Forest (0-1 MWC, 2-9 overall).

Individually, Millie Leonard '27 and Kylie Snell '26 hit .588 and .545, respectively, while Leticia Machado '29 had a .346 efficiency. Machado led her team in kills with 12, Keira Sullivan '27 added 11 and Leonard posted 10. Leonard now ranks 20th in program history with 650 kills.

In the assists department, Kylie-Ann Smith '27 dished out 21 and Marlowe Hurst '28 added 13. Smith is 11th in program history with 717 assists.

Leonard served a career-best four aces and Hurst came up with a pair. Double-digit digs were recorded by Gracie Lim '28 (18), Smith (14) and Gabby Choy '26 (12).

Grinnell used a 9-point run in the first set to turn a four-point deficit into a 13-8 lead. Leonard had all four of her aces in that span and Machado added three kills. The Pioneers never looked back on their way to the win.

A seven-point run sparked a second-set rally that allowed the visitors to break away from a 10-all tie. Machado had three kills during the spurt as Grinnell built a 17-10 lead on its way to victory.

Grinnell led the third set 15-13 before scoring eight of the next nine points. Leonard had three kills during the run to help the Pioneers finish off the sweep.

Grinnell has a tough test Saturday, playing Lawrence University at 1 p.m. in Appleton, Wis.
