Grinnell volleyball team answers the bell with huge victory at Lawrence

APPLETON, Wis. - After enjoying a historic victory over Lake Forest College Friday night, Grinnell College's volleyball team faced a monstrous task Saturday.

Playing on the road against a powerful Lawrence University team, the Pioneers responded with a four-set sweep in Midwest Conference play. Set scores, in favor of Grinnell, were 25-19, 23-25, 28-26 and 25-23.

Grinnell remained unbeaten in the MWC, moving to 3-0 while running its overall record to 7-10. Lawrence, which took defending MWC champ Cornell College to four sets Friday, fell to 0-2 in the league and 14-7 in all matches.

The Pioneers owned the net, hitting .253 while holding Lawrence to a .142 efficiency. Millie Leonard '27 and Leticia Machado '29 were a two-person wrecking crew for Grinnell, posting 19 and 18 kills, respectively. Leonard hit .486 and Machado came in at .348. Keira Sullivan '27 added 10 kills.

The first set went back and forth, with the Pioneers leading just 20-19 before closing with a five-point run that included kills by Leonard, Hayley Taka '26 and Machado and an ace by Sulllivan.

Lawrence tied it by winning the second set, and the teams battled to the end in a tight third set. Trailing 26-25, Grinnell showed its resilience by scoring three in a row with a kill by Leonard, another by Machado and ace serve by Sullivan to end it.

The fourth set was more of the same, with the teams battling back and forth before a kill by Sullivan finished off the victory.

Grinnell returns to play a match in Darby Gymnasium for the first time in a month Friday night when Wartburg College visits. The non-conference affair is slated for 6 p.m.
