Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Ted Schultz

Late goal by Cornell sinks Pioneer men's soccer team

GRINNELL, Iowa - Grinnell College battled back to force a 1-all tie, but it was for naught as host Cornell College scored in the waning minutes to come away with a 2-1 men's soccer win Tuesday afternoon.

The loss was Grinnell's first in Midwest Conference play as the Pioneers fell to 3-1 in the league and 4-6-3 overall. Cornell improved to 2-1 in the MWC and 4-7 in all games.

Cornell struck for a penalty kick goal just 13 minutes into the contest and held a 1-0 lead at halftime. But the Pioneers jumped right back into contention, tying the match two minutes into the second stanza on Samuel Gojjam's '27 goal. For the second time in less than a week, Gojjam delivered a corner kick from the right side that was perfectly-placed and found itself into the net. It was Gojjam's third goal this season and 14th in his career.

The teams remained tied until the 87th minute when Justice Toledo scored his second goal of the game. Cornell hung on from there for the win.

Grinnell outshot Cornell 13-12 and had 14 corners compared to none for the Rams. Gojjam took four shots for Grinnell, Jake Brecknock '28 added three and Demi Oni '27 and Luke Akosa '29 tallied two apiece. Jaxon Willoughby '26 and Adam Gallegos '28 added one shot apiece.

Pioneer keeper Jack Alexander '29 posted five saves.

Grinnell has plenty of time off before hosting Beloit College next Wednesday at Springer Field. Kickoff is 4 p.m.
