Pioneers come up big in 2nd half against Knox to secure spot in MWC Tourney

Grinnell women's soccer team shuts down Prairie Fire 3-0

GALESBURG, Ill. - With its back up against the wall, Grinnell College's women's soccer team responded in impressive fashion.

The Pioneers, who needed a victory at Knox College Saturday to earn a spot in the Midwest Conference Tournament, erupted for three second-half goals to break a scoreless halftime tie.

The 3-0 victory gave Grinnell a 3-3-2 mark in league play to earn the fourth and final seed. The Pioneers improved to 6-7-4 in all matches. Grinnell will face top-seeded Lake Forest College on the latter's pitch in the first round of the MWC Tournament Friday. Kickoff is 11 a.m.

The Pioneers, who will be making their fourth consecutive trip to postseason play, took a 1-0 lead in the 49th minute on Anna Curtin's '28 first career goal. Teya Lochridge '29 and Maya Mozena '28 added goals in the 59th and 79th minutes to secure the victory.

Pioneer keeper Peyton Dixon '27 posted the shutout, her seventh of the season and 25th in her career. She had one save.

Curtin's goal came four minutes into the second half when, after a corner kick, she won a tight battle for the ball to the right side of the net. Curtin spun and delivered a line shot from 6 yards out into the upper part of the net.

Lochridge's second goal of the season was assisted by Keiko Smith '26. On the play, Smith entered the box from the left side and worked a short cross to Lochridge, who got a left foot on the ball and lofted a shot into the goal.

Mozena gave Grinnell an insurance goal 20 minutes later, her second score of the season and fifth in her career. Rama Joshi '27 was credited with the assist when she gained control of the ball left of the goal and worked a cross to Mozena, who tapped it in from short range.

Grinnell owned the shots battle by a 9-2 count, and held an 8-2 edge in corners. Lochridge had four shots for Grinnell, while Sarah Travis' 27, Ella Hunt '26, Smith, Mozena and Curtin added one each.

Knox's season ends at 1-5-2 in the MWC and 4-10-3 in all games.
