Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Ted Schultz

Grinnell overcomes shaky start to give Central all it can handle

Pioneers put on impressive performance in season debut

GRINNELL, Iowa - After showing some season-opening rust, Grinnell College's women's basketball shook that off and put on an impressive display Tuesday night at Darby Gymnasium.

Central College scored the game's opening nine points and later led 22-6 before the Pioneers caught fire, catching up to the Dutch and even taking the lead.

However, unbeaten Central used a late surge and held off Grinnell down the stretch to secure a 60-56 victory.

Grinnell featured a balanced offensive attack with Carolyn Pierce '27 leading the charge with 13 points on the back of a trio of 3-pointers. Nora Lynch '28 added 10 points, while Skylar Thomas '26 put in eight. Georgia Patterson '29 was stellar in her collegiate debut, also scoring eight points.

Thomas had seven boards, Lynch blocked three shots and Ava Wu '29 came up with three steals. Kelsey Ericksen '26 added two steals and Thomas, Lynch and Pierce dished out two assists each.

The 3-0 Dutch led 22-8 after one period and were still ahead 31-22 late in the second frame. But Grinnell closed with a fury as buckets by Patterson and Amelia Rigel '28 made it a 31-26 game at halftime.

The Pioneers kept chopping away at the lead, eventually drawing even at 36-all on Pierce's trey with 5:18 left in the third quarter. Later, trailing by two, Grinnell surged to take a four-point lead with a bucket by Pierce and two by Patterson. That made it 42-38 with 2:36 left in the quarter.

However, Central responded and was ahead 45-44 heading into the final period. The Dutch built a seemingly-safe 56-50 cushion midway through the fourth quarter, but Grinnell would not go away as Lynch and Pierce drained consecutive treys to tie the game with 1:23 left.

Central was fouled on its next possession and made both free throws. The Dutch then forced a turnover and got two more free throws to secure the win.

Grinnell is at home again Saturday when Rockford University visits Darby for a 1 p.m. game.
