Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Ted Schultz

Quick start propels Pioneer women's basketball team past Rockford

GRINNELL, Iowa - A slow start hurt Grinnell College's women's basketball team in its season opener against Central College earlier in the week.

The Pioneers turned the tables Saturday afternoon, though, bolting out to a 21-1 lead on its way to toppling Rockford University 76-52 in Darby Gymnasium.

Grinnell (1-1) featured a balanced scoring attack, with Amelia Rigel '28 scoring a career-high 13 points, Kelsey Ericksen '26 tallying 12 and Avau Wu '29 putting in nine. Rigel was 3-of-6 from beyond the arc.

Juniper Schwartzman '27 and Nora Lynch '28 added nine and eight reobunds, respectively, with Lynch's being a career-high. Wu and Reese Stephens '27 came up with four assists each and Wu, Lynch and Carolyn Pierce '27 were each credited with two steals.

Lynch and Skylar Thomas '26 each sank two free throws for a 4-0 lead before Rockford (0-2) got on the board. But after that, it was all Grinnell as Ericksen sank a trey, Georgia Patterson '29 and Schwartzman each hit layups and Wu cashed in on a 3-pointer for a 14-1 lead.

Following a Rockford timeout, Lynch made a layup, Pierce converted a 3-pointer and Patterson sank a jumper for a 21-1 lead with 2:19 left in the first period.

Grinnell cruised from there, leading 23-4 after one period and 42-17 at halftime. The Pioneers brought a 57-33 lead into the final period.

Grinnell plays its third home game in as many outings Tuesday when Coe College visits Darby for a 7 p.m. affair.
