Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Ted Schultz

Second-half spurt pushes unbeaten Coe past Grinnell women's basketball team

GRINNELL, Iowa - For the first half of Tuesday night's women's basketball game, Grinnell College hung right with an opponent that is receiving votes for the national rankings.

But unbeaten Coe College erupted in the second half, particularly the fourth quarter when it outscored the Pioneers 18-4, on its way to a 75-54 victory at Darby Gymnasium.

The Kohawks did most of their damage inside, holding a 46-18 scoring edge in the paint and outrebounding Grinnell 41-27.

Georgia Patterson '29 had the best game of her young Grinnell career, shooting 4-of-6 from the field and 2-of-4 from 3-point land while scoring a team-high 11 points. Skylar Thomas '26 was also in double figures with 10.

Thomas and Juniper Schwartzman '27 each grabbed five boards for Grinnell (1-2) and Patterson led the way in steals with two.

The Pioneers showed they meant business from the start, scoring the game's first five points on a 3-pointer and layup by Thomas. Coe (3-0) came back, though, and built a 15-11 lead before Kelsey Ericksen '26 drained a trey in the waning seconds to bring Grinnell within 15-14 at the end of the period.

Grinnell built its biggest lead of the second period at 22-19 on Nora Lynch's '28 layup and free throw with 7:45 left. Coe took off, though, and built an eight-point lead with 2:40 left in the half. However, Grinnell caught fire as Amelia Rigel '28 made a layup, Patterson followed with a fast-break layup and Ericksen scored inside to bring Grinnell within two. A late basket by Coe made it a 37-33 halftime lead for the visitors.

Coe again built a sizable lead in the third period, going ahead by as many as 13. A 3-pointer late in the frame by Patterson brought the Pioneers within 57-50.

The Kohawks began the fourth quarter with a seven-point run and cruised from there for the victory.

Grinnell plays its first road game of the season Thursday with a trip to Storm Lake to face Buena Vista University. Tip-off is 6 p.m.
